Haiku - Grandparents

One Deep Breath’s prompt this week: Grandparents. I had none, but our son had two sets. I wanted these to be old-fashioned and calming…. but that is not where my mind took me…. Be sure to click on this link for One Deep Breath: amazing poets you will find.

The grandchild speaks

A day on his boat
nets dinner and tall fish tales
grandma’s heard them all

Granddad picks me up
with one arm behind his back
he’s like Superman

Nanny bakes me cakes
then does cartwheels on her lawn
Neighbors shake their heads

two extra kisses
thirteen extra hugs for me
my grandparents rock!

~~~~~
A mother wonders
nana or nanny
grandma B or granny me
which one will I be?
    Love your cartwheeling Nanny!
    Jo, I think a cartwheeling Nanny would be great, thanks!
    Oh, I like that you did this from your son’s perspective! A great take for today’s prompt!
    I love to write from different perspectives, Regina Clare Jane, thank you… I get bored with my own some days.
    How clever! Cake baking followed by cartwheeling is so visual!! Love it!
    Glad you thought it clever, Susan!
    I loved the image of grand ma doing cartwheels!
    So, do I, Gautami, but it won’t be me! Duck walk, maybe.
    Aww, I really love the last one. I was just thinking the other day what my kids and my sister’s kids (assuming we have some) will call my Dad.
    Bone, I’m glad you liked that one… Great minds think alike, I think about what they will call us, a lot… too many names I don’t want to be called, grin.
    I love the one about the names. The names are still coming for me. Sometimes grammy, sometimes nana. I also can really hear the child’s voice.
    Jone - Thank you for commenting… it fascinates me the names kids come up with (some with help, I’m sure) for their grandparents… and I am picky, there are some I don’t want to be called.. but then I have time to think of the perfect name, if only they will play along.
    I love the cartwheeling nanny, too. And the Superman one. That last one is delightful. Bet you’ll be a mix of them all!
    Thank you, Patricia for emailing me your comment. I finally really fixed the problem I created with my blog, grin. I want to be a mix, a great mix! It does take our son and his wife to participate, though, grin.
    loved reading about your grandparents, especially the Superman thing. grandparents are giant, magical superheroes that don’t fit into any other role.
    I never had grandparents, but I got to watch our son with my parents and my husband’s. Magical superheroes, yep, many grandparents seem to be, Megan.
    Hi Marcia! I am so glad you changed templates because your old one wasn’t letting me comment for at least a couple weeks — the name/email/website part stayed blank when I typed in my info and then it would show up all jumbled when I kept a key pressed down. This happened several times. So I checked back tonight and you have a beautiful new template that didn’t give me any trouble. I LOVE your haiku — they create such vivid images with cakes, hugs, kisses, cartwheels (!), Superman and fish tales. Really, really nice!
    Thank you, Clare, both for your comments on my haiku and for being patient.. and wait until you cme back, I’ve changed it again and I think I will keep this one a while… should be easy to comment on!
    Delightful. I have memories of my own grandparents, and now I see my mom with my kids. She crawls on her hands and knees to “rough house” with them. If she could cartwheel, she surely would. Love the image!
    You mom sounds like my mom was, Patois… She couldn’t cartwheel either, but she sure could have fun with our son! Glad you loved the images, and that you are lucky enough to see your mom with your kids!
