Friday 5 - Missing in Action

January 11, 2008 | Filed Under Friday 5, Inspiration, Poetry

Michelle of Poefusion chose words for Friday Five that clicked immediately, though I found myself editing one section a bit, which I do not normally do.

Her offered words seem deceptively simple, but they conjured deep thoughts: floss - intense - prey - cease - swallow . By all means, check out the thoughts she pried out of other writers. You will be glad you did, again, but please, stay, read this one, too.

Untitled

It should be a simple act,
buying floss for her latest
needlepoint project,
colors are listed
in black on white
between faint blue lines.

Yet, for Mariah,
intense drama
hides within
tiny skeins
to prey on what
heart she has left

colors evoke the past

Red passion denied on
Green grass long untrodden as
Orange juice slides down her angel’s chin while
Yellow ribbons remain tied to a withered trunk beneath
Blue skies hidden behind swollen gray where
White flashes of light flash
Purple dreams for
Pink cheeks of future morning afters.

Bruised hearts regenerate,
they told her once,
in silent voices meant to convince.

It was too much to swallow
that day and each month after.

Today
she marches past the rainbow
planned

and reaches for brown and black and gray
and forest green and navy
and then the palest of florescent green

to create
midnight sky woven between withered trunks,
tattered leaves braving winter’s dark chill,
and
a tiny seedling
working its way toward the sun.

Beautiful, rugged and chills all come together inside this wonderfully intense poem. To say I love this one is an understatement. I think you went deeper than I have ever seen you go with this particular piece. Certainly one of my favorites by you, thus far. Keep up the good work. Have a nice weekend.

Definitely a good dedication for anyone who’s loved someone missing in action.

This is a heartwrenching poem, finely written. I will come back to read it again, because it merits several reads.

[...] applies to anyone who has lost someone; to anyone who is in a funk. So, if you are so inclined, Missing in Action. That is not the title, I wanted, I was at a loss, it is technically [...]
