Friday Five - The Key

Late night, I realize I never checked Friday Five at Poefusion…. And the words were too good to pass up! Check out what others created with these five words: brunt - crack - key - cherry - discard

The Key

He took the brunt of her scathing words
without so much as a smirk,
though one nearby detected a crack
in his composure as minuscule
as the key to open
her heart

one that might have been missed
had they not drawn attention
to themselves
on August 14, 2010.

No one could find it,
the key, I mean,
many had tried,
but what heat expands
cold contracts.

A casual observer might think
her tongue so hot that day
the key would have expanded
much as
(no, not that)
(but this)
A casual observer might think
her tongue so hot that day
the key would have expanded
much as a normal
woman’s capacity to love

but instead that day
one nearby saw
a man’s will
to escape the constant furnace
of her words
cause him to discard her wrath
as he might a cherry pit

Her heart’s key
contracted
yet more.

I got so involved in the story, I left out 2 of the words and had to redo it…

Sounds like this guy hasn’t any room for expansion. Poor guy. But, I guess if someone is that difficult to love then- I say, move on. I hope I wasn’t to far off the mark here. Have a nice weekend. Happy Writing~

Michelle, I wrote this so quickly, it is a wonder anyone understood it at all, now that I reread it! But yes, she lost his love, she was too closed off for anyone to get to. Happy Writing! Thank you for wading through this one.

Great use of contracting/expanding as applied to emotions and inner walls that lose keys. I can see this one -
