Poetry Tumbled quickly, Two More

A continuation today, of two poems in my Poetry Tumble, started from one line of a special poem by a special poet. From that point I took the last line of my poem and made it the first line of another poem, not as a story continuation, but a new poem that stands alone. To see whose poem I borrowed (with permission) a line from — and to read the entire collection in order, click on Poetry Tumble tab at the top of the blog.

Second Grade

second grade
less than first
less than prime

was that to be his destiny?

merely almost?

that might have worked
had he become
a professional horseshoe player
rather than a stock car racer.

Could Have

rather than a stock car racer
he wanted to be
a writer

“knock knock
who’s there?
Someone.
Someone who?
Someone I didn’t mean to become….”

why didn’t he just write a new ending?

Wow… that ending really got me. I thought it was enough of a pang with the “Someone I didn’t mean to become…” but then you had to finish driving the nail in the coffin with that last line.

    Nicely done.

I liked this a lot, Marcia. Of course, I usually do. This really hit home for me, though.

Those last two lines are powerful. Resounding.

Also reminds me of a George Eliot quote: “It’s never too late to become what you might have been.”
