The Mask, three prompts combined

Three prompts:

The Mask

Her mask shielded him from
freckled innocence scattered
across her nose and cheeks,
combined with champagne
still fizzy on her tongue
her inner discomfort was
unannounced as she strutted into
midnight’s rabble.

She had long passed the stage of sylph
flitting just outside their reach,
and refused to stare
at a TV
alone
another night.

She cast aside
her former suasion,

for she had learned
by metered observation
some men were driven merely by
their compulsion to seize hips,

and though hers were
carved from stone,
her curves were
well-worn from hands
once applied
and well adapted to work
as a siren’s song

once
she got past
her inner fear.

  1. [...] trust me, my entry, The Mask, on a once fearful woman, is not going to cut it with a judge who: is a musician; is a grade school [...]

  2. Good luck on the contest. I hope you do well. Your poem is really good and I think the judge will see this too. Have a nice day.

Thank you, Michelle, you are so sweet.

    i love:
    her curves were
    well-worn from hands

    and well adapted to work
    as a siren’s song

very sensual as well as descriptive… it is fun to work a bunch of prompts at once sometimes… you did it wonderfully!!!!

Thank you, Paisley, I have to really work at making it sensual, it does not come naturally, not really.

Ah, this is perfect! She uses her mask wisely.

Well, wisely to gain her goal, but then….

  9. Whew! That’s quite a poem. At first, I took the mask to be a literal one, but after reading the entire thing, I’m not so sure. Great work!

The Wandering Author, thank you for the comment and also for showing me another side to my own poem… I never went that far in my own mind, to make it a non literal mask, but I like that idea more than my original intention!!

  10. Damien Riley says:

Marcia, wow great images. I’m afraid to fully know the fear it is she had to overcome! This was a very sensual poem and I feel compassion for the woman. It’s hard for me to know if she is off to make love or cry weakly like an old woman. The hips are so visual (maybe because I’m a horny guy who knows LOL). The mystery of the fear is what makes it open to individual connections. I prefer these types of poems. Excellent entry!
-Damien (’here comes the judge’ Riley! ;)

You cracked me up, Damien with that hips remark. Excuse me, I mean, ‘here comes the judge’ Riley! Thank you for the great images remark!
