3WW - Theatre of War

Bone, glad your dad is home and doing better! Now, to the other topic at hand: 3WW words: funny - remember - theatre.

And for me, since theatre consumed Leon’s life for fifteen years and I have quadzillions of funny stories and to remember, this should have been a comedic poem… but it is not. I chose to continue a theme I started with this poem: Mortared Life.

Theatre of War

It is funny,
I think not,

that some accept
the theatre of war
as other than a tragedy

they look through blinders
counting casualties
- on the other side -
as victories rather than
the tragedies they are

on their side
they award hearts of purple
and flags of patriotism
and stand ceremoniously
watching temporary faces
of tempered joy parade by
day after day,

year after year

as if to remember
tragedy as mere drama
would change it
into something it was not.

Please, understand, I wish my words not to be misconstrued that people should not fight for causes they believe in; nor am I saying a soldier and his family should not be proud that they are out there fighting for freedom - as war is the way it is done and has been for centuries. I am merely asking that for some that control and brought forth these fights, they allow themselves to take to heart that war to remain a tragedy for all involved - for many times the opposite side is fighting for the same internal reasons. There has to be a better way — but no, I don’t know it, though I think if it were more personalized from the beginning, fewer innocents, both soldiers and civilians, would have their lives and those of their expanded universe destroyed.

Thank you for reading this.

This was beautifully written and I admire you taking “theatre” into “theatre of war” … something in your message that we all need to remember.

i am so with you on this… to think that we are the chosen,, and our killings are in some way divinely blessed and our tactics those approved by any form of divinity… just makes me that much sicker of anything that proclaims itself to be”of god…”…..

I’m ex-forces and have family in the forces. And yes, war IS terrible. Going to war means that peace itself has been defeated.

That was very beautiful Marcia–the theater of war is a good place to take it

over 4,000 people have needlessly died and I don’t know how many people have suffered brain damage and/or post traumatic stress–and I’m
    only talking America

Thanks for the kind words on 3WW :)

Great poem. But for me the biggest tragedy is this line:

    “Please, understand…”

Has it gotten to the point that any time someone makes a plea for peace, or against war, they feel they have to defend themselves as something other than a far-left extremist wacko?

Very moving. I’ve often thought the same about the families and lives of the “enemies.”

I didn’t come up with anything for 3WW, but this morning a poem just emerged (not on the assigned 3), so I’m inviting you to stop by. http://collectingmythoughts.blogspot.com/2008/04/new-poem-poem-came-to-me-this-morning.html

    Good poem!

pjd’s comment is so valid: “Has it gotten to the point that any time someone makes a plea for peace, or against war, they feel they have to defend themselves as something other than a far-left extremist wacko?” I wholeheartedly agree.
