Write a mantra was Michelle’s recent prompt, and I intended to do just that… but I failed in that my mind expanded and fictionalized my initial thought into a summarized life story.

I am Fire

A long time ago:

I lived as an ember,
floating past all,
alighting on those that crossed my path -
to be brushed aside as a nuisance.

Thirty-four years ago:

I landed in a bed of love
where I smoldered
until a gentle breeze
encouraged I burst into flame
only to weaken at times
as life assaulted and I retreated
to flare again.

Today:

I am fire
and in control
as I spread my brightness
to reveal our joys
or smoke the skies
to cloak our darkness.

A long time from now:

I will die back to mere memory
in someone’s heart
and my words will spread
as embers to light
a new fire.
