Pride Undaunted, Poetry Tumbles (Not)

49.01. Pride Undaunted

war had long waged within:

arrows of self-worth repeatedly thrown against self-preservation’s iced cage at last had worn a hole to facilitate pride’s historical escape onto unsuspecting lips

and said secret smile of pride
dared to become public fodder,
dared to grow

… until it splattered like sin
across her once naked face

I am wired, I want to just sit and write one after the other after the other… Yes, my Poetry Tumble continues. I must stop myself for a while, but that last line is beckoning — but then so is the rest of my life, grin! How this series started and all of them in chronological order are found here: Poetry Tumble

EDIT:
… and we see what being wired did: I did NOT use the last line of the previous poem… therefore, this becomes the Poem 1 in my newest tumble of lines: Poetry Tumble Too. Feel free to stop back anytime to read them all in chronological order by clicking on the Poetry Tumble Too page at the top of this blog.

Big Girl

For a change of pace:

48. Big Girl

and he no longer slapped her hand away
for she no longer reached
for that which she should not touch

“a big girl now,
my daughter is,”
he’d say to all nearby

“she can cook (toast with jam)
and leaves toilet paper on the roll
(she no longer uses it to boldly wrap
the tired old dog or mean old cat)”

“a big girl now,
my daughter is,”
he’d say to all nearby

“and proud of her,
I surely am,
though she refuses staunchly
to fetch my slippers
or race me to the car
for another ride”

“16 is too old,”
she said to me,
“to be a passenger
with the likes of thee!

now give me the keys
you promised me”

and, yes, he turned them over
along with admonishing words…
and a secret smile of pride

Yes, I know, I made a mess of the punctuation in this… but life is about making mistakes and not making them, 99 percent of the poetry found within these pages is unedited after the fact, and very little is edited at all, though I usually do have punctuation done “my way”. This time, I was undecided on what “my way” was, so chose to post it anyway. These poems are written without forethought or planning, other than the first line being the last line of the previous one in my Poetry Tumble Series. Find out what prompted the first poem and view the journey to this poem by clicking on Poetry Tumble page at the top of this blog. Why not tumble your own series of poems? The great thing about it is when you have nothing to write about, you really do, just revisit the last poem and start writing.

EDIT: That’s not all I made a mess out of, this didn’t even have the line from the previous poem… Therefore, is not longer part of my Poetry Tumble, but merely a poem I like.

Victory of Persistence

47. Victory of Persistence

she would be here now
had he let her unlock heart’s door
but he chose to slap her hand away
each time it turned the key

496 times in twelve years
her growing fingers
flailed
reached
groped
stroked
twisted
tricked
manipulated…
but he chose to slap her hand away
each time it turned the key

And so, as normal,
persistence won,
and he no longer slapped her hand away

497.never.came.

46. If Only

if only she had not
revisited her past
her present would seem right
her future would be bright

if only she had not
revisited her past
she would be here now.

This is a continuation of my poetry tumble: the first line was the last line of the preceding poem in the series, this last line will be the first line of the next. See how it started or read in chronological order by clicking the Poetry Tumble page above, or simply click here.

Only (still tumbling)

45. Only

Only her hairdresser knows for sure
only her husband has no clue
only her mother cloaks her faults
only her sister took her dreams
only her neighbor stole her youth
only her daughter walked in her shoes

if only she had not.
