A Wedding Truth

It was with diminished capacity
she agreed

her mind betrayed by pent up lies
her heart betrayed by useless tears

it was with diminished capacity
she agreed

but woman’s intuition
held true.

07 of 30, April 2009 Prompt: Write a poem with the title, Diminished. I meant to, I read the word diminished at Poefusion and my fingers flew on this one. But, my current title won my heart. So, I did not follow directions, but I was very much inspired by Michelle’s prompt today! Inspiration, given or received is a moment worth keeping. Inspire me.

A Marriage

Even after
34 years,
minus a day or two,
of marriage,

words still count

remarks still caress
or cut

heat inflames
or ignites

passion wanes
and explodes
(yes, both kinds)

differences surface
as similarities flow steady

visions merge one day
and split with force another

and commitment strengthens

fingers entwine
as schemes burst into fruition
between grins and wonder
at how on earth we got this far
and how much we want to stay
as one heart – and two personalities

and perhaps that was the key.

2064

Michelle at Poefusion posted the word “hand” as a prompt yesterday. I had taken a photo of my hand goofing around one day. What follows is my mind working after midnight – not a time I prefer to be awake! And I did struggle with quite a bit of this one.

hand, wedding band

2064

If I were
to put a magnifying glass
to illuminate my wedding band

its lines would match those of my hand

for though both band and heart began their roles
while pure and unscathed
they have lived

and no one lives without etching the years
into their skin
or scarring their hearts

not even me.

I chose my band because it was unbiased by glitz
and glorified false hopes

and strong enough to last two lifetimes without
breaking its circle of love.

Yet thought never formed in my almost youthful flush of love
that 33.5 years or so later I would inform my
husband I had a new improved plan for us:

to last two lifetimes (in marriage speak)
and remain entwined for 90 years.

And though both hand and band show signs
of years gone by unprotected,
the band still shines in reflection of our hearts
and my hand reaches toward 2064.

I really will try to catch up reading this week. Lost in work….
